The House of Representatives failed once again to elect a new Speaker today after moderates Republicans stood firm in withholding their support for Jordan.

Congressman Jim Jordan of Ohio failed to become speaker following a vote that saw 20 Republicans vote for other candidates not in the running

With Congressman Steve Scalise out of the Speaker race, Congressman Jim Jordan appears likely to make a second bid. However, he may not have the support either.

"I think that both of these factions [on the left and right] are growing stronger, and I see this as something that is going to be with us for quite some time.”

America remains without a Speaker of the House during a time of serious international conflict.

“Having Kari Lake's name on the ballot is not something that [moderate Republicans] would have wanted," University of Arizona Professor Samara Klar said.

With House GOP opposition to Ukraine aid growing alongside calls to fix the border, Senate supporters of both efforts see potential to address the two together.

“It's an absolute shame in the United States that basically the political crime is working with the other side," Senator Joe Manchin told Newsweek.

Republican Senator Mitt Romney told Newsweek that Kevin McCarthy's ousting from the speakership "opens the door to chaos.”

“Chaos is Speaker McCarthy. Chaos is somebody who we cannot trust with their word," Republican Congressman Matt Gaetz said on the House floor.

“Kevin McCarthy won't be the speaker of the House," Congressman Matt Gaetz said, "or he'll be the speaker of the House working at the pleasure of the Democrats”

“I'm all about weapons, not welfare, so let's go do that and scale back on the humanitarian aid going to Ukraine," Senator Joni Ernst told Newsweek.

“I'm going to do everything I can to make it happen," Senator Joe Manchin told Newsweek. "The border has to be secure.”

Congressman Chip Roy told Newsweek Biden deserves "pretty much all" the blame because he's "utterly failed to do his job to secure the border.”

“I think it's reasonable for us to get at least one thing through negotiations," Republican Senator J.D. Vance told Newsweek.

“Republicans have yet to develop a clear message around abortion that negates or muddies Democrat's current advantage given public opinion on this issue.”

While the upper chamber has unified around preventing a government shutdown, Speaker Kevin McCarthy has been unable to rally his caucus around the issue.

Moderate and progressive Democrats are clashing over whether a bill preventing government shutdowns truly serves the American people's best interest.
